Virtual Campus Kindergarten: Intake Interviews and More

Virtual Campus Kindergarten: Intake Interviews and More
Posted on 09/11/2020

Starting Kindergarten is an exciting adventure for children and their families. It is a new beginning for you and your child. Children will develop relationships, independence, confidence, and the behaviours and attitudes that will ensure their success in school.

The virtual kindergarten experience will provide a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment for all children. We look forward to meeting you and your child on Friday September 18th. Your child’s bilingual kindergarten program team is made up of one Early Childhood Educator, an English teacher and a French teacher.

Virtual Intake Interviews

Students and families will be invited to a 15 min  intake interview by phone or online using Google Meet. Meetings for students entering Year 1 will be Wednesday Sept 16th and meetings for students entering Year 2 will take place Thursday Sept 17th. An invitation to this interview will be sent to your email address in the next few days. A Parent and Student Guide to Google Meet is available on

Prior to this meeting we ask you to complete the Kindergarten Intake Form  for new students to OCDSB.  Please download the form, fill it in, and save it. We will review this form during the interview. You will be asked to email it to your educator team later.

At the intake please advise the teacher of any reports (such as speech & language, psychology, occupational therapy and/or physiotherapy) or health information (epi-pen/medical condition) that would be valuable for your child’s educator to have in order to understand more about your child’s health and/or learning needs.

School Supplies

Some families may choose to buy school supplies, and if so, this voluntary supply list provides an idea of the kinds of supplies that are used by grade. For kindergarten the following are suggested:

  • 1 box of  broad tip coloured markers or crayons
  • 1 large size glue stick
  • Blank paper or notebooks

Preparing  for the First Day of Virtual School

Nutrition Breaks: Please ensure your child has a healthy breakfast before school class begins at 9am. Your child will have two nutrition breaks. Break times are a good opportunity to offer nutritious meals or snacks throughout the day.

Shoes/Clothing: Students should wear comfortable shoes and clothes to engage in light physical activities. Note: All students who require Epipens should have them readily available .

While some things will look different from the in-school experience, the virtual program has the same aims. Virtual Kindergarten Day will use a Learning Management System.  Google Resources for families, including Google Classroom, Google Sites and Google Meet can be found on our website.

The Kindergarten program follows the principle that partnerships with families and communities strengthen our ability to meet the needs of young children. Your child’s educators will let you know about communication methods between home and virtual school.

Looking forward to a year of positive growth!
